Warn of possible link between breast implants and a rare cancer

The US health authorities recently reported death due to a rare cancer of nine women who had breast implants.

The cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL, for its acronym in English) forms around the breast implant and attacks immune system cells.

"All information to date suggests that women with breast implants have very low but increased risk of ALCL compared to women without breast implants," revealed the Food and Drug Administration US (FDA, for its acronym in English).

The federal agency advised women who are considering getting breast implants talk to their surgeons about the benefits and disadvantages of choosing implants with smooth or textured surface.

As seen, most of the cases occurred in paciemtes implants having textured surfaces.

It also advises women with breast implants to seek medical advice if they notice symptoms such as fluid accumulation, a mass or hardened skin around the implants. So far most cases of ALCL show that this disease has a slow development and is treatable if caught early.
